"I think so, yeah." He recognized the door. "Chuck was complaining that he couldn't get it open." As much as he ever complained really; it had been more of a mildly put off chastising of an inanimate object. "Maybe it's one of those bootlegger trap doors or something that's gotten rusted shut?"

Vanessa shook her head and frowned. "I don't think so." She jiggled the doorknob a few times before kicking the door in just the right spot. To her surprise it opened. "You can tell Chuck that I was able to get the door open." Vanessa walked inside and looked around.

He stared at her back for a moment before jogging the few steps to catch up to her. "And here I thought that 'when it doubt, kick it' was a guy thing," he said playfully. "What's back here?"

"A seance room." Vanessa said quietly as she looked around. The room was filled with all sorts of occult icons and supplies. The feeling of deja vu washed over her as she took a seat at the table and noticed tarot cards sitting not far from her. "Care to have your fortune told?"

"I'll pass, thanks," he said quickly. "We should probably start looking around the other areas." The crowded feeling was coming back and it was giving him one hell of a migraine. He pulled the bottle of Tylenol he was starting to carry everywhere out of his pocket. "I mean, what type of stuff were you trying to find for your documentary thing?"

Vanessa brushed her hands over the cards and shrugged. "I have no idea." She looked up at him. "You said that bootleggers had trap doors. Do you know where any are in this bar?"

"The basement's probably a good place to start," he suggested. "Dry and cool and you can hide a lot underneath the floors."

Vanessa nodded and stood up as she placed the tarot cards in her purse. Not like the owner will be coming back for them, She reasoned silently and followed him out of the room. "How do you get to the basement?"

He was glad to be out of that weird little room. "There's probably a set of stairs around here somewhere," he said. He headed down a hallway, opening a door and finding a stairway heading down. "Oh... Tada?"

Vanessa raised her eyebrows in surprise. "I guess Chuck gave you the grand tour?" She asked as she followed him.

"More like a lucky guess," he said, trying to laugh it off. "I'll go first." He stepped down a few creaking stairs and groped along the wall for a light switch. "You wouldn't happen to have a flashlight, would you? I don't think the light from my phone would be bright enough and I can't find the switch."

Vanessa nodded and rummaged through her bag before pulling out a flashlight. "Don't leave home without it." She said, somewhat joking.

He took the flashlight from her with a laugh. "I'll have to toss one in my backpack when I get home." He swept the beam of the flashlight down the stairs before heading down. "I think that we're safe, aside from all the spiders."

"No ghosts of speakeasys past?" Vanessa asked with a grin as she followed him. "What a shame. I'd bet you they'd have some good stories to tell."

He shook his head. "That I know of, no one's died here. Which is kind of a prerequisite for ghosts, isn't it?" Not that he believed in that stuff.

Vanessa shook her head and looked around. "Not necessarily. Some ghosts haunt places that they feel an attachment too. Good or bad."

He wrinkled his nose as he headed deeper into the basement. "That makes a little sense, I guess."

"So, where would this trap door be?" Vanessa asked. "I mean, I've never been into one of these things but you seem to know where these things are."

"Well... It's a wood floor so there's going to be a space between the floor and the foundation, right?" He was guessing but it felt like it made sense. "There's probably a gap in where the wood planks meet." He sighed. "It would be easier if I could have found the light switch."

Vanessa sighed and held out her hand. "Give me the flashlight. I can make it brighter."

He raised an eyebrow but he handed her the flashlight despite his brain screaming for him to hold on to it, that there was nothing she could do. "....Okay."

Vanessa took the flashlight and muttered something under her breath. Within seconds, the room was illuminated. She handed it back to him. "Here. That should help."

His hand hovered over the flashlight for a moment before taking it. He wasn't going to ask about it because he didn't want to know. "Thanks." He started to sweep the beam of light over the floor for a few moments before spotting a seam in the wood. "Ah ha."

Vanessa grinned as she walked over to where the light was. "So, where does this lead? Do you know?"

"Well, it's either a small trap to hold bottles or a larger cellar." He reached to hold the light out to her. "Mind holding this so we can find out," he asked with a grin. This was kind of fun, in an odd way.
